Roll Call
The regular meeting of the Olympia Fields Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order at 6:34 pm.
Trustees Present: Howard Robinson (President), Dr. Taneen Brinson (Vice President), Sherry Demian (Treasurer), Elizabeth Hadala (Secretary), Jerry Pierson (Parliamentarian), and Carolyn Johnson
Absent: Dr. Kametta Clark
Also Present: Mary VanSwol
Minutes
Trustee Pierson moved to approve the minutes of the September meeting.
Trustee Demian seconded.
The motion passed.
Correspondence
President Robinson had no correspondence.
Financial Report
Trustee Demian presented the September financial report. The first installment for the Park Forest Public Library went through in mid-October.
Trustee Johnson moved to accept the financial report.
Trustee Hadala seconded.
The motion passed.
Budget 2025-2026
Trustee Demian presented a budget for 2025-2026. The Board discussed the proposed changes.
The Board discussed how purchases of flowers and acknowledgements should be handled. The budget has a miscellaneous budget line. President Robinson stated that he will reach out to the lawyer about defining the miscellaneous budget line or creating a new budget line. Trustee Brinson discussed standard operating procedures.
President Robinson stated that Diane Pierson’s brother passed away.
Trustee Pierson stated that he sent slides for Trustee Financial Responsibility that were presented at the Illinois Library Association (ILA) Conference.
Trustee Johnson moved that the Board approve the budget for 2025-2026.
Trustee Pierson seconded.
The motion passed.
Trustee Johnson asked what the Board would like to do for the Pierson family. She recommended a card and gift card. President Robinson suggested that a plant would be a good idea.
Trustee Johnson moved that the Board purchase a plant for the Pierson family in acknowledgement of the passing of Diane Pierson’s brother, not to exceed $200.
Trustee Demian seconded.
The motion passed.
100th Anniversary Planning
Trustee Demian suggested making a community blanket for the Village’s 100th Anniversary.
The Board discussed how this would work and different ideas.
Report from the Librarian
Library Director VanSwol reported that she received a letter regarding a household in Olympia Fields that is requesting a tax exemption. If the Board would like to reach out to the resident, she can pass on the contact information.
Staff member Shahedeh Tasharoki is working on the calligraphy version of Barbara’s poem. She anticipates finishing in early November.
Olympia Fields October Fest was October 12. Library Director VanSwol and staff member Elijah Gardner Woods attended and handed out flyers, crafts for kids, bookmarks, pens, and books.
November Fest is Saturday, November 2 from 12-3 pm. There will be a table for the Olympia Fields Public Library Board.
