Art Documentary Film Screening & Discussion: The Nest of Hyacinth
About this event
Body
Join filmmaker Andre Yarborough, a Park Forest native who lived in Istanbul for nearly 15 years, for a screening and discussion of his documentary film, The Nest of Hyacinth: Afro-descent Artists in Istanbul 1870-1970.
The film is a story told through the eyes and works of poets, painters, calligraphers, writers, singers, sculptors & actors who made Istanbul their home. The great social transformations of war, revolution, and modernization is reflected in their work. How did their work absorb influences from those they met, and how did Istanbul's culture absorb them? From James Baldwin and Don Cherry, to Violet Kalfa and Yaşar İzgi - discover the beauty of a lesser known port of the artistic diaspora.
