This multi-media presentation, led by Illinois Humanities Road Scholar, Connie Martin, explores music created by enslaved Africans and its connection to the Underground Railroad. You will be drawn into stories of secrecy surrounding hidden messages in the lyrics of several beloved Pre- and Post-Civil War Negro Spirituals. Research unlocks how these special songs signaled when, where, and how freedom seekers navigate escape routes North to freedom in Canada.
Registration is encouraged. Please note: photos and video are not permitted during this presentation.
